Faculty Senate Document 91-06.R3 (FAM 455) says:

The Upper Division Writing Requirement course shall be numbered as a 300-series course, and departments encouraged to make it a prerequisite for senior seminar, capstone, and other senior major courses as they deem feasible, so that students will take the writing course as early as possible in their upper-division programs.
