Economics Department Lab Rules

"ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE….
unless you obey a few simple rules. " (from Charkins' Inferno, Computer Lab, third canto)

The Economics Lab was obtained through a National Science Foundation grant. The Department has no funds for maintenance. This is your lab and we rely on you to take good care of it so that you and other students can continue to benefit from it. No other department on campus has the arrangement that we have with you. Failure to follow these rules will result in your loss of lab privileges.

1. Getting into the lab. You may pick up a key from Monica Villarruel in the Department Office during working hours (M - F 8:00 - 5:00) The lab is closed on weekends. If you want to use a computer at times when the lab is not available, use the lab in the "Wing" of the library. If you get the key from Monica, do not walk around with it. If you have the key, you should be doing one of three things - walking to the lab, working in the lab, or walking back to Monica's office. If you are anywhere else, other students can't get into the lab.

2. No food or drink of any kind, open or closed, in the lab. Computers do not get along with most other "things;" they have a hard enough time getting along with humans! Spilled food items can destroy keyboards and other important boards.

3. To use a computer, you should not have to do anything other than press any key to bring it back to life. If, for some reason, the computer is turned off or is not responding you may have to reboot.

4. Don't change the desktop or screensaver. Don't add programs without the instructor's permission.

5. Do not leave the lab unattended. If you are the only student in the lab, and you leave, even for a short time, be sure to close and lock the door.

6. When you are finished, exit all programs so that the desktop appears on the monitor. Do not turn the computer off; simply leave it.

7. For rules on appropriate use of lab equipment, refer to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Computer Lab Use Rules.
